Army In Progress: Chaos Orruks (Orcs)

I believe I’ve previously mentioned this project, and although you may argue that it’s Games Workshop and not exactly in keeping with this blog’s tagline of ‘anyone can afford wargaming’ I have made some significant savings on this one.

It all started here with some Savage Orruks. I was playing a game of Age of Sigmar with my previously posted Slaves To Darkness army, and realised I was missing a cheap unit to bubble wrap my more expensive and hard hitting guys from charges. The local store was severely lacking in Chaos Marauders, the go to unit for this purpose, and only stocked ‘Bloodreavers’ that’s Marauders of the Khorne variety. At £35 for 20 figures they’re not bad at all by GW pricing, however I settled on a box of Savage Orruks at £30 for 20, considering I like both sets equally it was somewhat of a no brainer.

The rest of the army followed suit.

Ardboys instead of Blood Warriors, £32 for 15 figures as opposed to £35 for 10. These 10 did come from the Start Collecting Ironjawz box so work out even cheaper.

Some Troggoths as Khorgoraths. This again was a bit of a no brainer. The poor Khorgorath is still a single pose model and only available in the Khorne Bloodbound Start Collecting box, so without raiding EBay for models I don’t particularly like, or spending £150 on Start Collecting boxes for models I don’t particularly like I bought some Troggoths which are very appropriately sized and have bags of character. £35 for the three.

I’m using Brutes as Skullreapers and Wrathmongers with some simple conversion work. 5 Brutes for £30 as opposed to 5 Skullreapers/Wrathmongers for £34.50.

Goregruntas count as Mighty Skullcrushers. The Skullcrushers are currently only available in boxes of 6 for £60, but the Goregruntas come in the Ironjawz Start Collecting box and so are much easier and cheaper to get hold of.

My Slaughterpriest is made out of a Warchanter which came in the Start Collecting box. Unfortunately if you want a Slaughterpriest these days you are paying full price (£18) since they no longer can be found in Start Collecting boxes.

Characters are where I’m making real savings with this army, since instead of buying the Khorne models or picking up their Ironjawz equivalents for £18-£22 each I bought a box of Ogor Ironguts for £25 giving me four characters for just over the price of one.

Skarr Bloodwrath.

Bloodsecrator.

Bloodstoker.

All still WIP, but I’m happy with how they’re coming along, and I have one Irongut left to turn into any character I want.

This isn’t a post saying the Bloodbound models are bad or not worth getting, in fact they’re fantastic and some of my favourite models GW have ever produced. It’s simply a post saying you can make some decent savings and have an army unique to yourself if you’re willing to think a little outside the box. You don’t always have to resort to second hand figures.

Here’s a look at the whole thing on the edge of the tatty hobby sofa:
