Matchstick Ancients

Anyone really can afford wargaming!

I was rummaging through various boxes looking for more discarded 15mm miniatures (don’t ask) when I stumbled upon a small container containing a few scratchbuilt ancients armies.

Here’s some Roman Cavalry:

I remember the excitement of grabbing a bag of matchsticks and tongue depressers from my local craft shop a few years back and imagining the size of the battles possible with the goodies contained within.

Here’s some Romans in testudo:

The best looking army I had were Sea Peoples. The red hatted variety I classed as elite, the blue regular and the blue hatted in two ranks were slingers (I think), the group of five blocks at the front were skirmishers and at the back in the middle was my attempt at a chariot.

Here’s up close on the chariot:

I got rather ambitious before this project burned out, here’s my attempt at an elephant:

I might just paint him for fun!

I’d recommend if you do embark on a similar type of madness you get a specific matchstick cutter, it’s rather helpful a hobby knife or clippers won’t cut it (pun not intended). Everything goes together with super glue nice and quickly. I had no rules in mind when I made these, but I’m sure they’d be appropriate for lots of different ones. They come in at 2mm scale.
