Warhammer 40,000 Third Edition Battle Report: Eldar vs Imperial Guard

A dead game or older edition of a tabletop game never truly dies, so long as you have the figures and the rules you can relive and replay whatever you want! Hence today’s post – Imperial Guard (definitely not Astra Militarum) vs Eldar (definitely not Aeldari). Using the 3rd edition rule book which has mini codexes for each 40k faction released at the time.

The scenario I attempted was a Raid on a fuel dump. The objective being that the Eldar just need to charge the barrels in the centre, survive a full assault phase in contact with them so they have the time to plant their demo charges and make a hasty getaway (see page 149 in the 3rd Ed rules for the full scenario). I had to fudge some things to fit on my 2’x2’ board, but since this was my first game of 3rd edition ever (I think) I wasn’t too worried.

Turn 1 went to the Eldar and they predictably advanced to get within that 12” range so they could let rip with their Shuriken Catapults.

Eldar firepower devastated the Guard’s left flank, but their charge and assault was less that effective enabling the platoon’s Command Section to hold the centre. The right fared even better for the Guard, losing only 5 men and then winning the combat make things look shaky for the Space Elves.

The Imperial response was devastating and swift. The stormtroopers swept round to support the left and with the help of a powerfist wielding Commissar they smashed through the Eldar Guardians. Then after another turn of ineffective melee combat on the part of the Eldar the Guard swung their line round and charged the Eldar in the back.

It was at this point the last Eldar standing, the Farseer saw his opportunity to complete the mission. Dashing through a gap he drew his Shuriken Pistol and gunned down a storm trooper.

He charged the storm trooper squad with a demo charge in hand and skewered a second trooper with his Witch Blade.

The Commissar swang his powerfist at the Farseer but only just caught him causing a wound, but not felling him, giving the Farseer time to detonate his charge.

Although the Eldar were effectively tabled they won the day, no doubt hampering the armour of the Imperial Guard by blowing up their fuel.

  1. Excellent stuff. Good choice of mission for the small board, EXCELLENT taste in edition. Third was marvellous, Rhino Rush silliness notwithstanding. Might be my favourite, truth be told.

  2. At this point you ought to also be nicely conscious of becoming manipulated yourself. It will be important to see that this is not acknowledged in all locations though. We begin the strategies by talking about quantity of fingers.
