Battle of the Rulebooks

I was watching a Discourse Miniature’s livestream on YouTube and she mentioned that she had a plan to play every wargame ruleset ever written. I audibly gasped. I assumed she meant every commercially made set of rules. Otherwise you’d be looking at millions of rulesets. Even every commercially made science fiction ruleset would be a challenge, every 28mm science fiction ruleset would be difficult. Discourse also mentioned making armies for all of these rulesets… which is absolute madness and a project you would need several lifetimes to complete. But she did remind me of a smaller project I have had in mind for many years – making two science fiction skirmish forces and then trying every generic sci fi skirmish ruleset, and by skirmish I mean 10 or less miniatures per side.

So that’s going to require me to put together a list, as far as rulebooks go I currently have:

Use Me Sci Fi

Combat Zone

Laserburn

Vor The Maelstrom

Donald Featherstone’s Skirmish Wargame

Grim Dark Fire Fight

Mutants and Death Ray Guns

Wasteman

That’s a good enough place to start I think. If you’re aware of any other rulesets I could throw in there let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

I’ve got some figures coming from Black Cat Bases because people like us always need more miniatures despite already having hundreds – some Feral Cultists and Elf Gangers.

I think the end goal of this project is to figure out the ins and outs of each ruleset, figure out the differences between each and get to grips with how different rules designers have solved the same set of problems, which things they include and which they choose to leave out. I’ll also be giving an in-depth review of each, so that should be fun to do.

  1. Space Weirdos is a great skirmish sized ruleset , very fun to play in my honest opinion. (and very cheap too)

  2. There’s always Hell by Starlight (he says, modestly) which does allow you to use ten figures a size, but like Laser Burn will let you use more.
But it’s an interesting project and I look forward to hearing more 🙂

  3. Yes, there is a sci fi ruleset in the back of his skirmish wargaming which was written by someone else based on his rules. I’m also keen to use his Close Little Wars, Man of Tin has already adapted these to sci fi, and I’ve got my own ideas on how to do the same.
