So how much money did you spend on your hobby in 2022?
My goal this last year was to track all of my hobby spending just to see how much this hobby was costing me, and I completely forgot about that goal in the second half of last year.
But I did manage to recover on Boxing Day after hastily scrubbing through my banking app and scribbling down transaction amounts. In the end the total hobby spend was £1661.81 (I think). I’ve probably missed a couple of things, and I don’t always get my supplies from strict hobby shops (a lot of places have army men, spray paint, glue), but at the absolute top estimate I’d take that up to £1800. That puts my spending at between £30-£35 pounds a week, between £4-£5 a day.
I’m not really sure what that means? Is that a lot of money, is it a little, is that average?
My goal this year was just to observe and catalog my spending, however in doing so I think I inadvertently stopped myself from spending more than I would have particularly early on when I was trying to use more than I had spent, which was a difficult thing to track. So the ‘normal’ yearly spend may actually be higher than my estimate, nearer to 2k.
But gathering that data hasn’t made me think particularly deeply about my spending. I don’t really have any conclusions. Even with my slightly cheaper version of the hobby it’s still fairly pricey, but I don’t really have another hobby to compare it to, I don’t now how pricey by comparison, so let me in the comments if you can shed some light.
Maybe a good goal to set for 2023 is to spend less and to not start anything new until I’ve finished all the unfinished projects I’ve got on the go (the same unimaginative goal we all set every year).
Having toyed with my global Deathzap campaign and having started it off limply, a goal this year has to be getting that going again and finishing it off. I also want to continue my Battle of the Rulebooks series, though I doubt that will be wrapped up in the next year.
My plan this year will is to track both spending and minis. Then I’ll have some data to compare last year with.
