Solo Slasher Gaming

So I’ve been sick again. This is getting a bit silly now, but what can you do? I think I’ve been bedridden sick more times in the past couple of months than I have been in the past few years.

Taking time out to lie on the sofa inevitably meant bingeing something on the tv, not sure why I decided to watch all of the Friday the 13ths but who can fathom the decisions of a overheating, Sudafed addled brain?

Needless to say they’re not great films, most of the time barely passable, and I was often unsure as to the purpose of them, they’re not scary, gory or titillating (especially towards the end of the series) which I thought was the purpose (since the plots aren’t up to much). After a childhood of sneaking peaks at scary looking VHS tapes in our local Blockbuster I can say I’m a little disappointed, the feeling after most films that loomed in the air was ‘is that it?’ If you’ve got to watch a slasher flick I’d go for something giallo flavoured, Dario Argento gives you all of the above albeit far more effectively but with a decent ‘whodunnit’ story to boot.

The end scenario of most of the films is a couple of surviving teens attempting to escape, call the police, find weapons etc. and I felt that would make a good gaming scenario – complete a task while avoiding the monster. Especially good for solo gaming. There is in fact already such a game called ‘Don’t Look Back’ made by Black Site Studios. It looks pretty good, but as you know if you’ve read this blog for any amount of time I’m always up for a rules writing challenge (plus things are cheaper this way), so I’ll be attempting my own thing.

I’ve even picked up some cheap Chinese railway figures to repaint for it:

Sure I’ll be able to make teens, townsfolk, cops and killers out of that bunch.

As far as the rules are concerned I can imagine the killer appearing at a random table edge at some point, and moving towards the closest victim. Once they’re dead the killer will move on to the next nearest. You could always attempt to distract the killer by moving a different victim closer and pulling them away etc. It’s up to the victims to then to go after randomly placed objective markers and gather the pieces to escape – find the car keys, gas tank and get them to the car and you can drive away (if the car starts in time). Find all the stuff to repair the phone lines and you can call the police, who’ll turn up in D3 turns. Find the keys to unlock the gun safe and you might be able to level the playing field. Be careful though, as one of those markers may see the killer teleporting directly to your location!

‘He’s Behind You!’ The killer stalks our victims with his cocktail stick dagger in hand!
