Warhammer 40k 10th Edition and My World Eaters

I suppose this is necessary despite this being a blog about cheaper wargaming. I was spurred on by a comment by Brother Brutus on my blog post regarding Grimdark future:

Sorry for the late post – just finding this article. Yes, OPR and GrimDark Future are the WH40K that I’ve been missing. Our group loves GDF. And indeed it looks like Games Workshop is making 10th Edition more streamlined (at least at first, then the rules-bloat will probably begin again, alas.)

I think he’s dead right. For those not in the know the promises regarding 10th edition 40k is that everything will be streamlined and all the rules you need will either be on a unit’s dataslate or on a couple of pages of army rules. Those that remember the transition from 7th edition to 8th have heard all of this before. Early 8th was really good, but it wasn’t long before things started bloating and power creeped. Games Workshop are promising that this won’t happen again but I suppose time will tell on that one.

The big advantage of the new edition will hopefully be sped up play, we can get a ‘proper’ game of Grimdark Future in easily in an evening (4000pts), for a game of 40k of a similar size in 9th Edition you need an entire day. I doubt the new edition will be as fast as Grimdark Future, there’s three rolls to determine the effect of a shot in 40k (hit-wound-save) against Grimdark’s two (hit-save) and looking at the new dataslates that hasn’t changed.

Having said all that I’m not non-optimistic and I’ll definitely be giving it a go, since the rules will at least initially be free and I’ve got all the models so I’d be silly not too.

Speaking of models here’s my World Eaters in their current state:

Going from completed on the left to only assembled on the right.

Earlier this year I mentioned I was going to track my hobby spend and models painted, which is a lot of paperwork, I think instead I’ll actually attempt to stick to my New Years hobby resolution of sticking by with this one army (in 40k at least there’s always room for hobby outside of Games Workshop) to see how big it can grow by the end of 2023. This is largely working towards a 20,000 point game of Grimdark Future against my mate’s Blood Angels.

This last week I’ve actually added two new units – 10 possessed and 6 bikers. The possessed are a kitbash using an old box of Bloodletters I had lying around and a box of old Khorne Berserkers, with regular marine jump packs since possessed can take wings in Grimdark Future as an upgrade:

There’s a few bits left to assemble but then I’ll be working hard at getting everything I’ve got painted. I think there’s a good few thousand points to go yet too before I hit 20k.

  1. They are looking good!

I am very skeptical about GW new rules, and I am old enough to have gone through a number of codex and rules changes. I just get annoyed when things change. I mean Snakes and Ladders and Chess don’t change rules like that! What it really means is forking our more cash for new rules books and trying to get my head around another set of rules just when I finally got used to the last!

The new 40K rules on morale are much more complex than the earlier ones. Why take a morale check EVERY time there is a casualty and then go through further tests on EVERY figure if the first is failed? That is making the game more playable?

  2. I was stumped when Age came f Sigmar came out and I recognised that the rules were easily applicable to 40k they didn’t just line up both games then and have a single core set.

  3. I ignored the Sigmar rules and just use parts of the old Warhammer rules in my 54mm games.
