One of the factions that has never fully manifested in the Deathzap Universe are the Khydran Enclaves. Giant bugs chomping on soldiers has been a love of mine ever since I saw the film ‘Them!’ as a kid.

With Halloween upon us there’s a plethora of cheap plastic bugs (usually spiders, but not always) in your local plastic tat shop. They’re not often much to look at fresh out of a bag, but with a little effort they can appear half decent.

The big issue with making them look decent is paint does not like sticking to these guys no matter what I’ve tried, however permanent paint markers seem to do the trick.
Fans of the Horus Heresy may think of a certain planet called ‘Murder’.

Just segment the legs, colour in the abdomen and cephalothorax. They don’t look like much up close, however en masse and from tabletop gaming distance:

36 figures coloured in in less than an hour, a fun force for £2. Can’t argue with that. I’ll be looking to expand next time I’m in a discount shop.

Yuck! Toys are certainly a great proxy whether it be dragons, flyers, giants or armour, for some quite expensive models.
A lot of the toys are a bit soft and bendy, which can be an issue
The simple paintjob works. You could try PVA glue of Modgepodge as an undercoat. it is what I use for rubbery plastics and also overcoat with the same, making sure it is spread evenly and not too thickly.
Modgepodge or PVA, spread evenly with a drop of dishwashing liquid can be used for undercoat and overcoat on rubbery plastic. The MP is supposed to cure for a month before overcoats.
I use Mod Podge a lot but it doesn’t seem to like these guys in particular.
