The One Box Wargame Challenge

Malev Minis recently started a challenge to create an entire wargame from a single box of miniatures. His own creation ‘Convict Combat’ is a death match style game using a box of Wargames Atlantic’s Cannon Fodder.

I thought for a while about the challenge and wanted to go with something a little outside the box (pun intended), so intentionally without thinking I grabbed a box of Wargames Atlantic’s Afghan Tribesmen, hoping an idea for a game would come later.

In retrospect I suppose many of my wargames are ‘one box’. The entire Deathzap universe spawned from a Poundland tub of army men, Crusage from a bag of knights, my own Dinosaur games from the same place.

So I guess I’ve been ‘one box’ gaming for a while now.

Here’s my idea for those Afghan Tribesmen. Imagine a massive earthquake in the middle 1800s cracks the Earth open revealing a giant Lovecraftian city buried under Afghanistan. imagine then the different interests, cults and treasure hunters that might explore the ancient city. What horrors lurk there and what blood will be spilled in the search for glory? The Afghan box contains 40 figures, more than enough for a few bands of mercenaries or crooks depending on whether they share their discoveries with the world or sell them off to the highest bidder.

That’s my initial idea anyway, what would you do for a one box wargame?
