Havok Tanks?: The Sturnhammer

I was rather shocked to find this on Amazon for £20. Thinking getting some tanks together for Havok as going to cost me an arm and a leg may not quite be true!

The Sturnhammer is a really great kit, the parts don’t come in a sprue, however they are all decently clean of mould lines and flash which made assembly a breeze!

You have the option of making an APC or the Sturnhammer and the Sturnhammer has three turret variants:

I will stress that a the turrets are a little front heavy, so if you’re the sort of person that doesn’t glue your turrets in place you may have to weight the back of them down a bit (shoving milliput inside should do the trick). I didn’t do that in assembly so I may have to glue a bolt to the underside of the turret where it goes into the hull.

Unlike GW tanks, there aren’t holes in the bottom.

I painted it up swiftly for my Karn army, even though they don’t officially get tanks, I figured I could just copy the Nexus Rebellion’s Hammer tank profile for now. Painting was basic, basecoat, wash, drybrush. I added a little sponge chipping to the red armour, and gave parts a silver drybrush to make it look like some paint had worn away. It only took a couple of hours to get done and that was mostly drying time.

I was so impressed by the kit and the price on Amazon I grabbed a second, the seller last time I checked still had a couple left, so if you’re in the market for a sci-fi if a little dwarfish tank I can’t recommend it enough!

This little project has gotten me thinking about differentiating heavy weapons and anti infantry weapons in Havok. Currently a big gun is the same as lots of little ones, since there is only one stat handling guns ‘Fire Power’. Maybe big guns should get infinite range, since at least on the sizes of miniatures and tables we’re playing on they essentially do. Then instead of a standard Fire Power stat, they can have a Heavy Fire Power stat. I imagine these are on the whole lower, 1-3 maximum. I think you should roll to hit as normal with those exploding 6s, however each hit scored counts as D6 hits. plus you reduce the Armour of the target by your Heavy Fire Power stat. So those pesky and basically invulnerable Battle Forms can be taken out if you use the right gun, which is really how it should be. Now I can indulge in the fun challenge of figuring out how many points that would be worth.

  1. Given the size of tables, infinite range seems a good idea. It’ll make the invulnerable Battle Forms play nicely and keep to cover as they approach 🙂
I think the heavy firepower stat idea has legs as well, give it a go
Obviously you’ll need to give infantry something they can take tanks out with, but at comparatively close range

  2. Very nice!
Yeah, infinite range seems sensible. I’ve played a few games now where that is the case accepting the scale and table size. Works well enough. Just need to limit lines of sight!

  3. Havok might have that baked in already. Tanks have poor close combat stats, but high strength, so one infantry man isn’t a problem, but a group attacking a tank will whittle it down and take it out which is nice.
