One Big Worm

At the height of my Havok hyperfocus, after getting at decently sized Nexus and Karn force together I turned my attention to the Pteravore.

As any Havok fan is aware, the Pteravore unfortunately only had three units released before the game died, Razors, Screamers and Hell Hounds. I managed all three utilising Wargames Atlantic’s Harvesters and a box of Mantic’s Nightstalker Reapers.

I immediately expanded the force with some Pteramites, using the small bugs in the Harvesters box, and by combining Harvester and Reaper parts I managed to produce a Pteravore Prime, a planned but unreleased officer unit:

And a slightly different combination of spare parts gave me my elite Pteravore, the Tormentors:

This was all fun, however with my Nexus and Karn utilising Battle Forms and tanks, the Pteravore needed some armour to keep them going.

And what is a better counter to tanks than a giant armoured worm?

Foolishly I started by supergluing my worm to a CD, which simply would not hold well enough due to the weight of the model and the angle I’d positioned him in. So after a while of messing around I just glue gunned him in place.

The worm is built in sections which are detachable. This cool feature of the model does mean you could buy two worms to make one even bigger worm, or split the worm in half and using the back end you could model one burrowing, and unsung the front another surfacing, two worms for the price of one!

Where these sections connect using ball joints there is a little gap that doesn’t look particularly good, so I used the glue gun to fill those in too. Then after a cheap spray can prime in white, I got into painting.

Painting was all straightforward, basecoat, wash, highlight.

I’m really happy with how this guy came out!

To game with I gave this guy: Speed 4, Fire Power 3, Close Combat 8, Psyke 7, Strength 6, Armour 5. This makes him cost 78 points.

I’m allowing as many per army as you get Battle Forms, so 2 per Brigade, 3 per Division, 4 per Corps and 5 per Army.

I’ve also given him the ‘flying’ rules the Banshee has to represent him burrowing however I’m ignoring the rule for him not being able to be engaged in melee combat.

I’m definitely looking forward to getting this guy to the battlefield soon!

  1. I like the worm paintwork green two tone, the bone is spot on and the eyes are graded which you don’t notice so it works. Yep a mean green beast.
