Big Deathzap

I had the sudden urge to paint some cheap army men this weekend. The fruits of my labour were two squads for some skirmishing in the Deathzap universe. These figures are much bigger than usual Deathzap figures and rather than being 20-30mms tall clock in at 54mm.

The first squad represent the Jendari Defence Army, possibly hailing from Korisaar or Novisaar within House Baronor.

My second squad are Solar Raiders, and come from the same bag of army men:

I think the majority of the poses within this bag are modern-ish Americans. Although I’m not quite sure what’s going on with the almost Thompson being carried by the closest Solar Raider.

It was after I’d painted the two squads above that I remembered I had a few more futuristic figures knocking around in a drawer, put out by Lanard Toys:

These guys will be great for representing the A.L.L, the most technologically advanced faction within the Deathzap Universe.

Then at the back of another drawer, I remembered the extra big army men I had, perfect for representing the Ascended, the Elite troops of the Supremacy of Kannis and pinnacle of genetic engineering:

Maybe I should also dig out some Dinosaurs to support my JDA…

It’s a real testament to the MDF terrain I picked up recently from Amazon that it just about fits these much bigger figures, and a selection of smaller one too:

Considering the sizes of my average humans, and Ascended in the smaller scale I normally play Deathzap in, how large a figure am I going to need to represent a Selenoid?

Now it’s time to get digging into my Google docs, notes on my phone and various scraps of paper to churn out some skirmish rules for my bigger lads.

  1. I love your reinterpretations of modern combat troops!

Most of my wargames are with figures this scale. (James of Quantrill’s Toy Soldiers).

  2. Ooh, they are big lads.
It’s surprising how good they look all painted up, given the base figures are not that well moulded or sculpted. They look really good.

  3. Those Lanard Toys figures are good. I bought them for using them for Starship Troopers, but so far I’ve only converted a squad of them into “V” Shock Troopers. They are a little bit small though.

  4. It’s funny how much of a mixed bag they can be in terms of height. The Lanard guys are generally shorter, but not shorter than my shortest army man, and looking at my finished cheaper army men, the guy with the radio is significantly taller than his comrades. So I’m head canoning it that the planets of Gnossos and Ashnyr which are the home worlds of the A.L.L just have slightly higher gravity than Jendar.

  5. the Lanard figures are soon of my favourite toy soldiers and you’ve reminded me that I’ve always wanted to paint them

preferably in solid bright colours because as much as i like a bit of grim dark “realism”, IMHO nothing says futuristic soldier quite like bright uniform
