I recently snapped up some dragons. 36 in all for £10. It was a bit of an impulse buy, but possibly the beginning of a bigger project.

I do t want to get off of the Deathzap train just yet, I should ride that one until the end of the line since I’m really enjoying painting up Space Pirates right now and imagining how each Deathzap faction is dealing with the Selenoids.

I’ve only just finished another Pirate crew!
So why snap up those dragons? Well as you may be aware I am partial to a good Dinosaur game:

Dinosaurs really got my blog writing out of the gate. The trouble with Dinosaurs however is their somewhat limited scope mechanically… all melee combat, plus there’s a thing called reality you’re loosely tied to. Dragons however don’t suffer from such annoyances, traditionally they can shoot, and also they’re not real, and never have been.

So I saw a lot of potential in these little guys… hear me out… think Fantasy Mechwarrior. Different species of Dragons fighting maybe for human masters, maybe with a splinter faction of dragons going their own way. You could have a human handler on the table, leading to the obvious objective of killing them to win. Or this could be a fantasy world entirely ruled by dragons. Maybe humans are still in the Stone Age?

Bases of livestock for a quick snack to heal up mid fight. Bases of angry peasants or cavemen making certain spots more dangerous to land, or maybe a quick snack if they can be overcome.

I guess, much like Mechwarrior, heat is a factor with dragons too. Or is it the reverse? Weapons in Mechwarrior cause heat to build up, maybe Dragons use their firepower to cool off? Gameplay wise you’d need a trade off, you’d need a negative consequence for breathing fire at an opponent. Maybe dragons are better running hot, faster, tougher and more dangerous in combat, and when they breathe fire they’re weakened. Obviously if they run too hot then they die. That could be an interesting risk/reward mechanic.

On the Medieval side, the Knights that are now plentiful on Amazon aren’t a bad combo with the Dragons. They’re maybe a little big at 1/72 scale, but equally it’s not difficult to find farm animals at this scale either.
I could pinch a couple of these Dragons to add to my Dragon Temple faction for my universal skirmish rules. But for some reason I have to have all the minis for that project come from Irregular.

Inspirational, as usual. I loved the Space Pirate color scheme.
I’m so enjoying the space pirate uniforms.
If you paint up the knights as Wartomata, Dragon Warriors could still be in the deathzap universe…
Ooo! That is an idea!
If you want dragons fighting for human masters (or vice versa) have you read The Dragon Masters by Jack Vance

I too love the pirate crew uniform 🙂
I’ve got too much reading to do now lol. Iain M. Banks and Jack Vance. I’m generally terrible at reading fiction, because reading fiction almost immediately makes me want to write fiction. Similar to wargaming, playing a game almost immediately makes me want to tinker with it, or write my own.
Jack Vance has the advantage that he tended to write very slim volumes, you’ll read that one in an evening 🙂
