Playtesting Darkfell

As mentioned in a previous version post I’ve been playing a lot of Darkfell and rather enjoying it. The basic rules are still the same as seen here. Although now I’ve added 15 separate character classes, 5 Magic Users, 5 Ranged Weapon Specialists and 5 Melee Specialists, each with 10 different traits that your character can gain by levelling up. I’m fairly happy with where things are at but I’m still working on bulking out the rules with scenarios and a campaign system along with solo play.

The scenario I tried out today I’m calling ‘infestation’, I had zombies and so it was a zombie infestation, however you can infest your playing area with whatever you have to hand.

The two warbands I’m currently working with are Mutants and Raiders (Vikings + Druids). The Mutants came out on top with some lucky dice rolling after the Raiders exhausted themselves and withdrew.

It was a fun game and the zombies got me to start thinking about how I’m going to write the AI for solo play. The zombies in this scenario get their own turn, shamble 2” towards the nearest visible enemy and attack them if possible.

The horde did seem a little tough though as the Raiders retired after only slaying 5, the Mutants withdrew after 7. They could have potentially kept going but with their dice pool almost exhausted and therefore being unable to properly defend themselves sticking around would have probably gotten them all killed.

There was only one casualty, Spider the Mutant leader. After the game I rolled on the Character Regression table to see whether he actually died or made it out. He was mostly unscathed but has gained the trait Terrified, which means from now on he’s terrified of zombies and as such will get no bonuses in combat against them. I’m sure he’ll be useful in dealing with future infestations!

Hopefully I’m going to be releasing the whole thing at some point. If you have any good scenario ideas let me know!

  1. Re scenarios, I like a good fighting retreat. For example, side A is faced by an overwhelming force of side B, BUT there is a secret tunnel through which they can escape to safety. However, the tunnel is blocked, so they have to split their strength between clearing the blockage and holding off the attackers; and then manage the retreat once the tunnel is open without taking too many casualties or allowing side B to get to the tunnel entrance before they are all out. Maybe side A appear in waves, so that their pressure ebbs and flows. Victory is determined by how many side A escape.
