Mission Accomplished – 1000pts of Soviets

I can’t quite believe this is done! The Bolt Action Soviet starter army I grabbed a long time ago was sat in its box on my shelf of shame seeming like an insurmountable task.

But I stuck to that simple and quick scheme I explained last time, and before long I was ploughing through all that infantry with relative ease.

And here they all are:

They’re unlikely to win any painting competitions anytime soon, but what I think is best about this kind of basic painting is that at some point were I so inclined, I could easily come back, add highlights and finish them to a really high standard.

One thing that speeded this project up massively were my one step bases, had I fiddled around with sand, layers of glue, then painting and then adding flock I would have finished days later, with in my opinion a comparable result.

Something that makes it look like you really put the effort in is a simple orange/yellow drybrush on the guys carrying molotovs.

The T-34 was extremely quick to paint. Looking around online I found tanks with many different kinds of markings and some with no markings at all, I got the distinct impression that having tanks for the Russians was more important than what they looked like. So I went with my favourite kind of markings where the crews (I assume) just painted slogans on themselves. One side says ‘Tiger Hunter’ the other ‘Nazi Puncher’. There’s also a faded red star.

The tank itself was simple to paint, green, brown wash, drybrush. I put Citadel’s Typhus Corrosion all over the tracks for wet mud.

I think I bought the set for £63, so that puts me at £274.50 painted against £55.40 spent. I think keeping track of my spending is discouraging me from buying stuff, which is probably good for my bank balance and that shelf of shame!

  1. Don’t undersell yourself, That’s not ‘basic painting’, they are looking tabletop ready already. Perfection is the enemy of good enough on the tabletop.
Looking forward to seeing those giant B&M Home Bargains figures painted as well … our local store / mail order had none.

  2. I agree with 26soldiersoftin – you might think of the paint jobs as basic, but to me they look fantastic. The faces are great, and I love that glow on the side of the molotov thrower. Brilliant stuff! I always wondered why a tank crew would paint a slogan on the side of their tank turret – isn’t it like a huge target (aim here!)

  3. They look really good but I was fascinated by your paint board. That could become part of hour terrain as toxic sludge!

  4. For me it depends on the thing in the pile, a lot of it is stuff I just haven’t gotten round to yet, no issue with those. Other bits are things I felt I needed to buy to make an army work after a Games Workshop rules change… I’m ashamed of those.

  5. Fair comment! Deathzap is more fun anyway. I’ve been wondering for a while how to convert GW Orksies to Pygges by making them stand up a bit straighter and giving them snouts and cute little ears. It’s not high on my list of things to do. 🙂

    Regards, Chris.
