In the interest of somewhat stat-less wargaming I had the idea of condensing my page of rules for Deadwars down into a single die:

The rules themselves are simple enough that it wasn’t too difficult, and I even included optional random movement.
So if you want to move a figure roll the die and consult the number in the bottom right, if your figure is hindered in some way (carrying a big shield, they’re wounded, crossing rough ground etc) consult the underlined number on the bottom left.
If you want to shoot someone roll the die and if ‘Ranged Hit’ comes up you hit them, if ‘Ranged Hit 6”’ comes up then you hit them, but only if they’re within 6”. ‘Melee Hit’ is fairly self explanatory. If ‘Double Weapon’ comes up it counts as a melee hit but only if the attacker is carrying two melee weapons or a single two handed weapon.
Saving throws again are pretty self explanatory, if ‘Save’ comes up you save, if ‘Shield’ comes up you save but only if you’re carrying a shield.
To avoid confusion as to what the less obvious words mean everything is colour coded, so ranged hits are in red, melee black, saves blue and the effects of failed saves are in purple.

So if a figure fails a save then you roll for its effect, ‘dead’ is straight forward, ‘wounded’ means the figure always counts as hindered for movement and if a figure is wounded a second time then they are automatically killed.
Here are all the sides on my computer before printing and sticking:

I think I should have included an extra melee hit, and maybe changed one of the wounded results to ‘flesh wound’ or ‘not wounded’ so a figure has a chance to fail multiple saves but keep going. It would also be pretty easy to add in cavalry movement at the top of each face.

I also painted a warband to represent Dracula’s forces.
I wonder who will come out victorious in the Deadwars?
A very nice idea
I like that approach. I’m not a lover of tables and stats if there’s an alternative. Imagine this on a polyhedral die with more faces… it would be a good size, but a single roll that delivers a combat outcome, just like that? Good work
Interesting mechanic! It also opens the door to having different dice per faction, if there were traits unique to them.
I have though a lot about that, haven’t figured out the appropriate size though, and how much info would be required on a single face of that die. Statistically if a melee attack becomes a kill 8%ish of the time, and a melee kill with two weapons or a double handed weapon 11%ish of the time to keep the similar stats would require something like a D30. I am the sort of person that will enjoy mulling over that idea.
Different dice for different factions is an ingenious idea!
