With the lurgie going strong this week I mostly moved between a succession of naps and occasional snacking. However I did make some progress on the Ghost Legions front.

Instead of going for my usual fluorescent ghost approach seen previously:

I went down a more grimdark alley, inspired mostly by my small skirmish warbands seen previously:

It’s a look that I figured was not only quick to replicate, but also had more breadth for expansion, instead of simply picking a colour.

The figures were first given additional texture with a coat of Typhus Corrosion, then painted all over in a dark brown, I then added random splotches of a watered down ochre and pastel green, just for variation. I picked out all of the skin with a pale blue grey, and picked out the weapons with orange. Everything got a wash of watered down black, and a bone drybrush. I then picked out the weapons again with orange to make them stand out.
Here’s a close-up of a single 8th Army soldier:

The force so far consists of a large amount of infantry, so I think it would be good to finish it up with some cavalry, possibly Napoleonic, possibly British, to keep the theme going.

The Shermans have been my latest addition, I looked up reference images of old rusty tanks to get inspiration and used the same colour palette as the figures to keep it all tied together.
I’ll start work on my ‘evil’ army shortly. Which currently consist of some medieval knights and WW2 Germans. I’m calling them ‘evil’ but I don’t really want to constrain myself to two forces of historical ‘goodies’ vs historical ‘baddies’, as then I’d get into rather difficult territory. My 8th Army I think reasonably could be called ‘goodies’ and few would complain, my Colonial Brits however are a little more difficult!
In a Ghostly sense then, I’m imagining the underworld is kept in place my these magical monoliths, or pillars that hold up the overworld. When pillars are destroyed it causes the two worlds to merge, which means an increase in paranormal activity for us overworlders. Until eventually the two worlds merge completely and either everyone dies or everyone stops being dead (depending upon your perspective). So the good guys are all about protecting the pillars and looking for a way to build more, and the bad guys are all about capturing them and destroying them.
Should be a fun thing to imagine my ghosts fighting for. Plus I’m sure occult societies, demigods and angels all get involved at some point.
Who built these pillars anyway?
That is a very effective paintwork finish. James
Ooh ooh, tanks tanks!
They look very effective as rusty heaps but not quite so bad that they don’t work anymore. Nicely done.
I like your pillars idea.
Mark Man of TIN says: Ghost Legions goes from strength to strength, now including burned out rusted tanks. What next, skeletal cavalry? Good fun with ‘spot the old figure’ recognition. This should become magazine worthy – I’m sure John Treadaway editor of Miniature Wargames would like this, based on his fantasy gaming background. I’m sure he would like the pound store plastic aspect of your other work.
Nice work! I did a double take on the second picture picture down, then realised that it was two skulls placed back-to-back,not a grimdark Michelangelo’s David, seen from the back. Once seen, you can’t unsee it! 🙂
Regards, Chris.
😆 now I can’t unsee it!
