Occasional Doing the Sensible Thing – Palm Trees

I’ve had a bag of palm trees knocking around for some time. I most likely nabbed it when I started painting Japanese troops for Bolt Action. This week was the week I finally got them sorted.

I started out by separate leaves and the trunks, I’m sure the trees based up as is would have looked fine, but I wanted to have a go at making them look a bit better.

The spare Warhammer bases and washers are for stability and weight, you could of course use anything to mount the trees, but I like the slight height of the Warhammer bases. Not only can you easily conceal a washer on the underside, but they also sit nicer on rough terrain, whereas something flat would wobble. I would t recommend going out and buying them for this purpose though, as they can be pricey, just see if a mate has some spare if you don’t already have a few of your own.

I affixed all the trees with a hot glue gun.

My own texture goop primed the trees and I gave them a mix of natural-ish base coats (I’m no palm expert). Sand was added to the bases and also painted.

Everything then got a black wash and a drybrush. The drybrush colour was mostly white, with a little flesh and a little green mixed in. It really brought everything together, so the colour variations are now more subtle.

Then I superglued the leaves back on (not really sure how to treat them in any way), and put some static grass in patches on the bases.

I really need to get back to this blog’s namesake setting… just need to make some huge Selenoids…

All in all it was a productive couple of mornings’ project, and having bases of trees, while not particularly ‘sexy’, does pay dividends wargaming wise.
