The Simple Toy Soldier Game V2 and Irregular Miniature’s 28mm Sci Fi Range

I think I’ve finally cracked it! The Simple Toy Soldier Game that is. Ever since the core idea of the game popped into my head a few years ago I’ve been constantly fiddling and tweaking with it, and I could get close to it working, but I was never quite there. Now finally I think […]

Bits Box Pox Walkers and a Bit on Having Shaky Hands

I guess this counts as another post on the importance of never throwing anything away. I’ve recently been playing Warhammer 40,000 which to be honest is a bit of a childhood dream come true. I’ve got pretty shaky hands, which doesn’t just affect my ability to paint figures sometimes it also makes it almost impossible […]

Speed Painting Khorne Berserkers

I’ve been thinking a lot about Khorne Berserkers lately and remembered I’d already got 24 fully assembled lads, with textured bases and primed black in a box somewhere. So I pulled the box out and had a look at them: I had an idea as to how I was going to go about painting them […]

Evil Sully

From time to time the wife and I head off to sunny, sticky Florida and engage in a bit of Disney. I like going, I love the attention to detail, the atmosphere, it’s like a huge wargaming terrain project where different worlds are faked into believable existence. Alas however I’m unable to engage in some […]

Asgard Mandiblax and Space Marines

So I’ve finished my little 15mm fellas from Asgard (now from Alternative Armies) originally for Combat 3000 which as I stated in my previous post I probably wont be using them for. Combat 3000 is a very complex and complicated system which is why it was originally for generic sci fi RPGs and not for platoon […]

On The Desk…

I’ve been relocating of late to our ‘box’ room and by utilising some Ikea furniture brilliantly picked out by my good wife, I’ve managed to set up a permanent hobby station for the first time ever! Sorting through different storage containers scattered around the house lead me to a number of discoveries all of which […]

Painting Faces

I’ve occasionally dabbled with regular painting. The kind artists do on canvases. I think people generally have a perception that this kind of painting is very difficult, nigh on impossible, when in reality I think it’s far easier than miniature painting. This is for a very simple reason. With miniature painting you’re very limited on […]

Another Lesson in Never Throwing Anything Away – Tyranids

A Previous Post on this topic. I’ve been enjoying painting my Daemons army up for 9th edition 40k. However it has been mentally taxing as I stare down the next unit and consider how much time it will take to get them painted. So I needed a little break, I needed to get instant results! […]

Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Dry Bones

I’ve always wanted an Undead army and although I’ve often bought and even painted the odd unit, I’ve never managed a full force. Until now… I’ve been somewhat gripped by my 15mm Fantasy project and rules, and couldn’t resist dipping in to Irregular Miniature’s Undead range. Plus since I was going for a more ghostly […]

Painting a Fiend of Slaanesh

So I’ve been experimenting lately with acrylic inks, mine are from Daler Rowney. I’m aware people definitely don’t use them in the way I have, however I’ve found a little method that works for me. I’m a big fan of Games Workshop’s Contrast paints and as someone who prefers to paint quickly how could I […]

40 Elves and a Ballista

In my previous Dark Dwarves post I mentioned some Elves. I’ve now finally finished them! That’s a unit of eight archers, 10 spearmen, 10 swordsmen, 10 two handed sword/axemen and a ballista with two crew. I did the old trick of painting details on the minis with different colours but selecting from a small palette to […]

Chaos Daemons for 9th

Is there some irony in a person hoping to become a Church of England Priest collecting Daemons? Chaos Daemons have always been a favourite army of mine. It’s probably down to how bizarre many of the models are, how the range stays close to its roots and even newer models are very close in appearance […]

Not So Vintage Toy Soldiers

Cameria had always been a divided nation, ever since the first settlers arrived the North and South were two distinct colonies, peoples, cultures. However after a few bad years of mining the Camerian Council decided to send forces out to take resources from other weaker nations. Ngoai just north of Cameria across the Amenic Sea […]

Matchstick Ancients

Anyone really can afford wargaming! I was rummaging through various boxes looking for more discarded 15mm miniatures (don’t ask) when I stumbled upon a small container containing a few scratchbuilt ancients armies. Here’s some Roman Cavalry: I remember the excitement of grabbing a bag of matchsticks and tongue depressers from my local craft shop a […]

49 Dark Dwarves

In the interest of getting things painted before buying more, here’s 49 Irregular Miniatures 15mm Dark Dwarves, 24 Halberdiers, 20 Crossbows and 5 Heroes. As you can see below some are mostly painted already however I didn’t really like the scheme I had come up with so I chose to throw them in with the […]

Tiny Wars – Fantasy Skirmish

Here’s a little side project I worked on while thinking long and hard about the rules for Deathzap. One of the issues during lockdown is finding the space to play bigger games, especially while sharing the house with the parents in law, I’m currently hashing out Deathzap on a 2×2 but it could really use […]

The Return of Deathzap

After attempting to build up my painted model count I was increasingly finding myself working on older projects. Eventually I knew I had to return to this blog’s namesake game Deathzap! The rules in their original incarnation are on the menu for this site and I am currently also ruminating on Deathzap 2, but before […]

Quarantine Painting Projects

So over the last week I’ve been picking up those abandoned painting projects and either finishing them off or starting a few for the first time. I’ve painted three warbands for Darkfell. Zombie pirates and their controlling Voodoo Priests… Some Landschneckts… And some bizarre animal based knights. All minis are from Irregular and have their […]

Craftworld Ashon Sen

Disney World was a lot of fun and thankfully we made it home just before all the travel issues Coronavirus has presented. With a few days in the house before returning to work I felt like embarking on a bit of a challenge, that being to assemble and paint a Warhammer Start Collecting box in […]

A smattering of projects…

So the Mrs and I after off to Disney World in Florida as of Saturday. I’ll be missing my usual hobby fix, but thought I’d post up what’s currently on the painting table. Firstly I picked up this set a long time ago and only just got round to finishing painting them – the Erin […]

Mechstorm

A while back I wondered what a Donald Featherstone Mech Combat ruleset would look like. I give you Mechstorm. The smaller Mechs are painted and based pieces from Risk 2210AD, the larger mechs and flyers are from EM4 (you probably already recognised them). For the rules the smallest of the Risk Mechs I named ‘Pups’, […]

Irregular Miniatures 15mm Star Marines

Here’s a bunch of guys I’ve had my eye on for probably a decade. Irregular Miniatures 15mm Star Marines were one of my first purchases this year. I’ve painted up a small force speedily to get them to the table, they’ve been primed white and then hit with contrast paints, I’ve picked out the metallics, […]

Weirwood Crones

Here’s my latest unit all ready to go! The Weirwood Crones (Sisters of The Thorn) add some speed and magic to my growing force. I’m also continually aware that this blog is supposed to be about cheap gaming, but the majority of units in the force have been salvaged from the bits box and the […]

Children of The Weirwood

I’ve added another unit to my Blanchitsu Cities of Sigmar army ‘The Children of the Weirwood’, these guys will count as ‘Eternal Guard’ and I’m really happy with them, thinking I might use this conversion as the basis for lots of other units in the force. So if you can’t tell that’s a Bloodletter body […]

The Blanchitsu Is Strong With This One

For those of you that the word ‘Blanchitsu’ is new here’s a little explanation… ‘Blanchitsu’ is a miniature modelling and painting style inspired by the artwork of John Blanche a long time concept artist for Games Workshop. You could describe his style as Marmite you either love it or hate it, and I love it […]
