Expanding My Crusade

I’m still playing with my Templars and horrors despite a slow hobby week.

As you’ll notice the demonic forces gained a dragon, a heavy hitter to counter that Nephilim.

Unfortunately for the demons however, the Templars have brought another Nephilim to bear. This one particularly penitent:

I hope to get him painted over the next couple of days.

I’d hoped playing Donald Featherstone’s basic rules would feel right if I took fewer figures but gave them multiple wounds and attacks. Unfortunately it seems 6 figures aside does feel like it’s too few so I’m aiming to increase each side up to 15-20 infantry with a couple of monsters.

I’ve increased Templar numbers with a few converted figures. I’m debating whether to paint these new figures up as Knights Hospitaller or sticking to Knights Templar for uniformity.

I’m also experimenting with some handgunners:

I’m not 100% sold on these WW2 soldiers with head swaps, but I know from my Deathzap figures how far a paint job can transform the look of a mini, so I’m optimistic. I’m equally aware that handguns had no part in the Crusades, but neither did Nephilim or Dragons, so I’m not bothered.

To back up the forces of Evil, I’m rebasing some of my bog roll Wraiths:

To match the aesthetic I’m going for they’ll need a little more work than just rebasing but not much. Although with the Wraiths and Sauracens, in tow, it may mean my Evil guys will be lacking in fire power, so that second monster may well have to be another Dragon unless I can figure out a way of producing convincing Imps. The Selenoids I’ve produced in the past for Deathzap may do the trick:

It’ll be fun this week to wander around my local discount shops and imagine what monsters I can cook up with a little know how and a can do attitude.

  1. They look great. For hand gunners another option would be using Renaissance-type figures such as conquistadores. But for the earliest types of handguns they looked like mini hand-held cannons. They were also a bit unpredictable as well as slow to load. A few probably blew up in gunners’ faces.

If I was to use modern infantry I’d probably cut away the barrels, drill holes and add new barrels from copper wire or tubes.

There are also those GW Ogres with literal hand cannons. For big guys they are a bit short if put next to traditional toy soldier 50 or 54mm toys soldiers. I extended the length of the legs on one of mine by cutting and then inserting metal wire and putty or else using a new lower part from an American Indian.

  2. I’ve just invested in some mystery bags of Schleic (not spelled that way) dinosaurs. The quality is terrific and they were under half price. Not quite as cheap as some but they’ll work in all sorts of settings.
