Ghost Legions Battle Report: WW1 Germans vs Medieval Knights

Here’s a somewhat shorter and maybe less detailed battle report, of a recent game I had using the rules I posted last time. The game sparked something, an entire mental debate around what makes a game ‘fun’… which if my thought properly coagulate, will make up my next post. Not much to report game wise, however I did take some fun pics, so…

The Germans – 5 Riflemen, with 2 with additional melee weapons and 2 men with SMGs.
5 Knights with melee weapons and shields and two with two handed melee weapons.

With the battle soon to commence, the whole thing seemed to hinge on an outcrop of trees that split the battlefield in half.

The Germans got the first turn which ended after five of them had activated, choosing to stick to the right of the trees, and the open ground they knew their weaponry would have a better chance at taking down the knights.

The Knights turn played out similarly, ending after five figures they simply advanced.

During the second German turn, the troops formed a rough firing line across the square, and they even managed to suppress the Knights a little.

A bad turn for the Knights meant only four activated and they again pushed forwards, but they were unable to engage any Germans in melee combat.

The Germans’ next turn saw them unable to put out enough suppressive fire, that it seemed inevitable that the Knights would soon be clashing with them.

The prediction came true as the Knights burst from the ruins and cut down two Germans.

And again, despite their close proximity, the Germans could not bring enough fire power to bear to slow the Knights. And so…

The massacre continued.

Until the building the final two Germans held was stormed by the Knights.

It seems that lots of armour is now maybe somewhat more effective than good guns, which is something I’ll need to figure out how to balance. However, as stated above, I’m now thinking about what makes a game ‘fun’, any ideas, comment below!

  1. Well you’ve probably asked the biggest question in the hobby 🙂

One comment I would make is that in a game with two competing players, some of the fun comes from both players feeling they are in with a chance. That neither feels that the rules, the forces, or the scenario mean they are just there to provide an ego boost for their opponent.

For the solo player it is more complicated. 🙂

  2. Can’t wait to see more developments! For me, what makes a game ‘fun’ is story, so it might be nice to introduce a bit of lore to the game. In terms of gameplay, it needs to be fair and fast. The element of chance will always bring some fun and random moments! I’ve had some Frostgrave Barbarians sitting around unpainted for a few years, so I’ve dived in and painted them up as glowing green ghosts! I may paint some Oathmark dwarfs as living stone statues for them to fight! If I get in any test games, I’ll let you know how they go!

  3. I think part of the struggle is the power of the 2+ save. Upping the number of shots makes things a lot worse for your guys with 3+ and higher saves. Tweaking points is the way to go I think. Less guys with a 2+ save to begin with.
