At the Desk of Madness

Too much to hobby, too little time.

Here’s a little hobby update, and as you can probably imagine, things are getting a little bit out of hand.

My recent and unexpected return to Ghost Legions has exploded. I may be getting way more 1/72 figures painted in a traditional style (something I had previously thought was the way madness lay), but I am also buying far more too.

I suppose it’s all down to the price point on these figures. Do I need a Celt army? Not really… Is it over 100 figures? Yep… Does it cost half the current rate of a basic infantry box for Warhammer? Yep… You see my conundrum. Especially when that’s well more than a week’s worth of hobbying, theorising rules and then trying them out. The hours of fun to pounds spent ratio is an extremely good one!

Over in the back of the above image are two WIP referees for my wrestling game along with a section of Flintloque Orcs I’m going to be using for Frontear. On the Frontear front, I even picked up USE ME: The Wild West for when I want a simpler and speedier Cowboy game.

As a side note on the 1/72 thing, I have been reticent on including more modern troops. I don’t see anything wrong with people that want to play really recent conflicts on the table top, many of our Wargaming heroes wrote rules for WW2 and they actually fought in it. I just feel uncomfortable looking at the 1/72 ranges of modern Russians and Ukrainians (not to mention the Israelis and Palestinians that are also available). You can’t really help what makes you feel uncomfortable… especially when I’m not directly gaming those things, which would be a good exercise in understanding the struggles of modern soldiers, but I’m writing quirky rules for ghosts… so I’m directly representing the casualties.

The ethical concerns of this wargamer aside, I did manage to get my hands on some sci-fi minis in this scale, even if the sprues do look like an eldritch horror:

This is a set called Space Battles 01 from Orion and Dark Dream Studio. Which represents a future war between the Federation and Imperials. It comes with a few sci-fi infantry and two mechs:

Both of which definitely did not skip leg day.

So while I may feel uncomfortable representing recent casualties, I’m none too bothered representing casualties that haven’t happened yet.

Speaking of casualties that haven’t happened yet… I did splurge recently in a rather big way. Trawling the usual culprits of discount wargaming had me stumble across a rather good sale of some Mantic Firefight stuff. The thing I’ve often thought about Mantic is that their miniatures generally aren’t great, but their rules are amazing.

They have been turning the miniatures complaint around more recently with updated ranges, and some that I have experienced, especially their Epic Warpath range are amazing.

Anywho Athena Games were selling off Firefight Strike Forces for £41 each, which unlike Warhammer boxes are fully playable decently sized armies. So of course I bought 3 and one of the starter sets that have the newer rulebook in. So now I can field a GCPS, Enforcer, Marauder (those are orcs, or orx using Mantic’s nomenclature), and Plague… that’s once I’ve built and painted a lot of models.

A drawer full of assembled Plague

Hey ho, lots to do, but I am having lots of fun, and I guess that’s the main thing!
