A Completely Random Magic System? (And Some Beastmen)

So I’ve been playing around with Chob-Noggoth, and as is the nature of these kinds of Mordheim ripoffs, I wanted a magic system.

Now, writing a bunch of of spells doesn’t exactly sound appealing to me. Since this is all supposed to be a bit silly anyway, I had the idea that each time a spell was cast, you could randomly generate the whole thing. Roll for the target of the spell, and then roll for the effect. The skill of a particular mage is seen in their ability to dispell their own spell.

So to start:

If a Mage wants to cast a magic spell, they can instead of shooting. The spell itself is always randomly generated. The Mage can choose to not cast the spell once it is rolled for, however to do so they must pass a test, rolling a number of dice (1 for Bad Mages, 2 for Standard, 3 for Veteran and 4 for Heroic), needing a single 6. If the 6 is rolled then the spell is not cast, otherwise it is. If they roll any 1s while attempting to stop the spell they suffer a wound per 1 rolled.

First roll for the target of the spell:

1: Self

2: A random Ally

3: The closest Ally

4: The closest Enemy

5: A random Enemy

6: The controlling player picks any Warrior.

Then roll for the effect of the spell:

1: The target heals D3 Wounds.

2: The target loses D3 Wounds.

3: The player controlling the Mage can move the target D6”.

4: Force the target to take a morale check.

5: The target cannot do anything until the end of the next round.

6: The target can move double distance and will attack with twice the dice until the end of the next round.

This of course adds a bit of fun randomness to each cast, and has the potential to do rather humorous things. I’ve had a mage attempt to attack an enemy, then rolled to make that enemy stronger, attempted to dispell, it backfired on them, and then with the mage rules, rolled for the effect of their final wound and they exploded taking out the friendly standing next to them.

That’s the sort of stuff we live for.

I did have a rather ‘out there’ idea some time ago where you could declare anything as a spell, your opponent declared something equal and opposite, and then you roll for the outcome…

I suppose you could make that rule your entire Wargame.

Anyway, here’s some Beastmen I put together this week:

This creative spark hasn’t run out yet. I’m hoping to get a battle report out sometime soon.
