Building Darkfell

What got me into wargaming was undoubtedly terrain. When I was a kid I remember hording polystyrene and painting it up as a lizard man temple. As a teenager what brought me back into the wargaming fold was watching terrain building tutorials on YouTube. I just love building things. I love creating worlds. I’ve also […]

Baba Nurgle

I wanted a new Daemon Prince for my Death Guard army after seeing how effective they can be in my last game of 40k (long time ago now). Despite having a drawer full of official Daemon Prince models I set out to essential scratch build one with my bits box and a small baby doll. […]

Mechanics Lab: Knight Fight

As the sun slowly rose over the grassy plain, two bands of armoured warriors readied themselves to draw blood, to feel steel bite through armour and flesh, and to fall into eternal obscurity or taste the immortal glory of legendary victory. Also there were paint pots nearby and some unfinished Death Guard models that I […]

Alternative Armies Corporate Ashigaru and Post Apocalyptic Warriors

I’ve been feverishly painting and rules writing again. When I started counting how many miniatures I had painted this year I didn’t expect to go over 1000! But thinking about it I probably also should have kept count of how many rule sets I was going to write too. Needless to say I’ve now lost […]

Rawl Plug Ancients

Something on the stranger end of the spectrum here, but something I think has legs. This week I’ve been turning those Rawl Plugs you see in various shapes, colours and sizes into something you can game with. As they do come in a number of shapes and sizes the particular one I’ve been using is […]

Mechanics Lab: Deathzap Examples

Based on the last post, I thought it would be a good idea to post some examples of how shooting works in my latest version of Deathzap as the rules as written can seem far more complicated than they really are. Example 1: A squad of Reddinists open fire on some Allegiance Riflemen. The Reddinists […]

Mechanics Lab: Deathzap and the D6 Round 2

I’m calling what you see below Deathzap Version Plasmashok. This is because the key dice mechanic is stolen from a much older game unsurprisingly called Plasmashok I wrote back in university. What I like most about the mechanic is that shooting and combat both ‘feel’ right, are fun to resolve and leave room for the […]

Mechanics Lab: Deathzap and The D6

I’ve been playing a lot of Deathzap lately and not reporting on it. I think that’s because I’ve never been happy with the rules. Even towards the end of the Oltra campaign I played out not too long ago the rules were niggling me. By then I was using a variation on the Simple Toy […]

Froggy The Chaos Predator

I began as just a man, a man with a dream, a dream to combine a plastic frog skeleton from the Halloween section of a Super Market with an old and dusty Chaos Rhino to make a Chaos Predator. I went through several iterations of combining the frog with the tank and landed on what […]

Mechanics Lab – Darkfell: The Wager

I play a lot of games. Most of these games are just me, playing myself, trying out rules I’ve come up with. I thought ‘Mechanics Lab’ could be a series of posts where I waffle on about those homebrew rule sets I try out. After posting on The Simple Toy Soldier Game and thinking that […]

Death Guard Update

So I’ve been yearning to post on an unwieldy number of projects lately, I’m suffering from a little creativity overload which happens from time to time (at least for me it does). It’s when you keep starting and getting excited about so many new projects you never make too much progress in any single area. […]

The Simple Toy Soldier Game V2 and Irregular Miniature’s 28mm Sci Fi Range

I think I’ve finally cracked it! The Simple Toy Soldier Game that is. Ever since the core idea of the game popped into my head a few years ago I’ve been constantly fiddling and tweaking with it, and I could get close to it working, but I was never quite there. Now finally I think […]

Bits Box Pox Walkers and a Bit on Having Shaky Hands

I guess this counts as another post on the importance of never throwing anything away. I’ve recently been playing Warhammer 40,000 which to be honest is a bit of a childhood dream come true. I’ve got pretty shaky hands, which doesn’t just affect my ability to paint figures sometimes it also makes it almost impossible […]

Speed Painting Khorne Berserkers

I’ve been thinking a lot about Khorne Berserkers lately and remembered I’d already got 24 fully assembled lads, with textured bases and primed black in a box somewhere. So I pulled the box out and had a look at them: I had an idea as to how I was going to go about painting them […]

Warhammer 40,000 Third Edition Battle Report: Eldar vs Imperial Guard

A dead game or older edition of a tabletop game never truly dies, so long as you have the figures and the rules you can relive and replay whatever you want! Hence today’s post – Imperial Guard (definitely not Astra Militarum) vs Eldar (definitely not Aeldari). Using the 3rd edition rule book which has mini […]

A Little Gaming Board

A little project I wanted to get done in the weekend just gone was a small gaming board for my anime-ish miniature skirmish game. I have somewhat of an obsession for playing games in smaller spaces and so I took a one foot square cork tile as the base. I cut the corners off of […]

How many projects is too many?

How long is a piece of string? How much more space is there on my hobby table? How many more draws do I have to store all my crap? To answer all those questions and possibly answer the question to why am I here, what is my purpose in life? Here are five gas mask […]

Featherstone’s Ghost Legions

Evil Sully

From time to time the wife and I head off to sunny, sticky Florida and engage in a bit of Disney. I like going, I love the attention to detail, the atmosphere, it’s like a huge wargaming terrain project where different worlds are faked into believable existence. Alas however I’m unable to engage in some […]

Asgard Mandiblax and Space Marines

So I’ve finished my little 15mm fellas from Asgard (now from Alternative Armies) originally for Combat 3000 which as I stated in my previous post I probably wont be using them for. Combat 3000 is a very complex and complicated system which is why it was originally for generic sci fi RPGs and not for platoon […]

Starguard is Awesome!

I was initially hoping to play a game of Combat 3000 this weekend, just something small and simple to work out the rules. Combat 3000 has eluded me however, it is extremely complicated and definitely not the sort of thing I was looking for. Do not worry though, my Mandiblax and Space Marines shall not […]

On The Desk…

I’ve been relocating of late to our ‘box’ room and by utilising some Ikea furniture brilliantly picked out by my good wife, I’ve managed to set up a permanent hobby station for the first time ever! Sorting through different storage containers scattered around the house lead me to a number of discoveries all of which […]

Self Indulgent and Gratuitous Maths

I’d consider myself a bit of a maths geek (yes that’s maths not math America) and it’s one of the aspects of wargaming that I love the most. The statistical analysis of your different tactical options, or Math-hammer (should be Maths-hammer… or Math-hammers?) as it’s commonly known because of you guessed it Warhammer just really […]

Another Lesson in Never Throwing Anything Away – Tyranids

A Previous Post on this topic. I’ve been enjoying painting my Daemons army up for 9th edition 40k. However it has been mentally taxing as I stare down the next unit and consider how much time it will take to get them painted. So I needed a little break, I needed to get instant results! […]

Dem Bones, Dem Bones, Dem Dry Bones

I’ve always wanted an Undead army and although I’ve often bought and even painted the odd unit, I’ve never managed a full force. Until now… I’ve been somewhat gripped by my 15mm Fantasy project and rules, and couldn’t resist dipping in to Irregular Miniature’s Undead range. Plus since I was going for a more ghostly […]
