Deadwars

So thanks to copious amounts of cold and flu capsules I managed a little painting yesterday and a little game today. After realising I had a box of Mars Zombie Pirates and Dark Alliance Mummies I was pondering the possibilities of an all out war between the forces of Davy Jones and Imhotep (I wonder […]

Comfortable Christmas Wargaming 2022 – Best Laid Plans…

I didn’t get my usual comfortable game in this year using Stuart Asquith’s rules and Italeri figures, I instead played a game of Grimdark Future with a mate actually on Christmas Day. His Sisters of Battle fought against my Eldar from Craftworld Ashon-Sen and as seems to be the case with Grimdark we’re always having […]

Battle of the Rulebooks Part 4: Close Wars by Donald Featherstone

Since I’m still figuring out how I’m going to dissect these rule sets I might as well start with something simple. Oh and I’ve now painted all the Eisenkern Stormtroopers for this project: Close Wars is really not designed for sci-fi, but the advantage of such a simple rule set is that simple adjustments can […]

Battle of the Rulebooks Part 3: Gathering Forces

Of course I had to take this opportunity to buy more little plastic people. This wasn’t as simple as grabbing whatever I wanted though, I did have a few goals in mind. My main goal was to have two forces, one elite with few models, decent armour and weaponry, and the other with more models, […]

Grimdark Future

I haven’t been posting as much as I would like lately, although that’s not for a bad reason, it’s for a very good one (albeit a gaming one). A major distraction from my usual repertoire of Deathzap, Bolt Action and whatever other strangeness I can play with has been Grimdark Future from One Page Rules. […]

Battle of the Rulebooks

I was watching a Discourse Miniature’s livestream on YouTube and she mentioned that she had a plan to play every wargame ruleset ever written. I audibly gasped. I assumed she meant every commercially made set of rules. Otherwise you’d be looking at millions of rulesets. Even every commercially made science fiction ruleset would be a […]

Speed Painting Thousand Sons

A couple of friends and I are building up armies for One Page Rules, starting slow and building up 500 points a month. I’ve always wanted to do Thousand Sons, but the painting has always put me off. However I think I’ve found a scheme I can really work with.

Why so many Deathzap rulesets?

So I have an addiction to writing rules for Deathzap. There’s a number of reasons for this, I mean I love writing rules, but the main reason for Deathzap is that overtime I’ve recognised that no one ruleset can cover every aspect of combat within a fictional universe. Warhammer 40,000 is the obvious example to […]

The Second Global War Campaign – Story Battle Report: Close Call

The young Prime Darrik June pulled his pistol from its holster and examined it closely. “You won’t need that” spat Chief Protector Cassil. “Because you’ve got me?” smirked the Prime sarcastically. “No Prime” replied Cassil, “because we’re on parade and if they want to take you out it’ll be from afar, I’d choose a Cambarian […]

The Second Global War

The causes of the Second Global War on the planet Jendar are obvious. With the end of the Camerian Civil War and the new United Cameria joining the Jendari Collective in 2100AC the power balance between the two great powers of Jendar had shifted. House Baronor now in a weaker position chose to strike first […]

Counter Attack

With the Harkovian foothold established in Goza, Gozan forces scrambled to push them out. As mentioned in my previous post I’m taking the opportunity of these early stages in the war to figure out the rules and my campaign system. I wanted faster and deadlier melee combat as all combat so far is fairly slow. […]

Orctober

With Orctober upon us I went about looking for Orcs to paint up and enter into the various Orctober painting competitions you see around on the web. Alternative Armies is always a go to for me if I’m in the mood for a characterful figure. However in this instance I went to Essex Miniatures and […]

Still Painting Poundland Figures

After the fun I had messing around with my universal skirmish rules I wondered about using them for skirmishing in the Deathzap universe. To that end I’ve been painting up more Poundland figures: I think the 25mm Warhammer style bases really make them look like ‘proper’ gaming figures: Not that there’s such a thing as […]

Blanchitsu Barbie

Here’s a blast from the past. A project started around 4 years ago and only just finished today. Some of the pictures are even from our old house! So I started with your average discount shop barbie, a box of milliput, some old clothes and a tub of bits. After a repose, covering her in […]

Holiday Hobby Update

It’s been holiday time on the Isle of Man, lots of fun has been had spending time with the parents, little hobby progress though as I’m sure you can imagine. The Isle of Man is a pretty cool place and seeing lots of dioramas involving Vikings has wetted my appetite for some Dark Age skirmishing, […]

Mechanics Lab: Advanced Gaol28

I’ve been having a lot of fun lately mashing plastic kits together and thinking about rules for my very rules light skirmish game Gaol28. Some commenters on Instagram asked about a more advanced version which presented a good number of challenges, challenges I could think about for hours and hours. I suppose the biggest issue […]

Gaol28

Here’s a little project I also undertook while sick with COVID. My goal was to write something short but interesting so I could post the entirety of the rules on Instagram (hence the odd method of posting here).

Wargaming in bed

I’m sure the Featherstone scholars among you will remember what I’m talking about but the specific article I’m thinking of has so far eluded me despite looking through all of my Featherstone books multiple times. I remember Donald talking about a time he was bedridden and desiring to get a game in so he requested […]

Still Death Duelling and Reflecting on My Hobby Spend

It was a busy weekend so there was a lack of hobby progress, however I have still been duelling, refining rules, speeding things up, buying miniatures and painting them. The figures bought are mostly from the weird and wonderful areas of Irregular’s 28mm range – zombies, futuristic cops, ninjas and aliens. But a duel with […]

The Charge! – A Comfortable Wargaming Battle Report

A comfortable start to some comfortable gaming, two infantry forces go at each other: I fully expect the Pavlovians to hold the line, but this should none the less be a fun go at some simple horse and musket rules that borrow heavily from Stuart Asquith and Donald Featherstone. Turn 1 was uneventful, but rolling […]

Death Patrol – A Simple Toy Soldier Game Battle Report

The end of the Camerian Civil War sparked a global war on the planet Jendar when House Baronor fearing a sudden attack from the Jendari Collective chose to strike first. With the ensuing dissolution of the SynJen alliance troops from both House Baronor and the Jendari Collective withdrew from the moon of Oltra back to […]

Easy Terrain: Craters

Good for Bolt Action, 40k, especially good for Lunar if you skip a step, and of course good for Deathzap! Start out with a foil pie plate: Then mash it into your basic shape: I then coated the entire thing in texture paint. Mine is home made and hard wearing. It’s a mix of filler, […]

Soldiers of the Combat

A big thanks to the Man of Tin for pointing these out on his blog: https://poundstoreplasticwarriors.wordpress.com/2022/06/21/soldiers-of-the-combat-toys-for-a-pound-online/ I picked up three boxes and got one of each colour. Each box contained 36 figures (in 8 possible poses), a flag (always German for some reason), some accessories all extremely oversized other than a potentially useful tree and […]

Getting Stranger

That strange creativity flow hasn’t yet slowed down it seems as over the last week I’ve been adding even more odd creations to my collection. Starting with some town guards, they were your garden variety plastic knight figures in rough 54mm scale, with head replacements and added cocktail sticks. One guys weapon was replaced with […]

Let go and get weird

The wife and I went to the Broomhill Estate for our Wedding Anniversary (7 years) and took in some art. A lot of it was the sort of stuff you look at and don’t really ‘get’. But one piece really did get me. It’s called ‘Welcome to the Third Millennium’ by artist Mike Roles. It’s […]
